Underground Serenade

Synopsis

Underground Serenade follows the musicians through their daily life of searching for the perfect track and facing a challenging reality. Alongside authentically documented scenes the film fades into compositional coherences of diegetic sounds with picturesque landscapes far from dancing crowds.

Bio-filmography of the director

Lukas Berger is a photographer and filmmaker, who worked on international projects in Burkina Faso, China, Ethiopia, Mexico, Pakistan, Uganda, Uzbekistan and many European countries. His films produced by Filmes Do Gajo: Circus Debere Berhan (2015), Circus Movements (2019) and Wuqiao Circus (2020) were screened at over 200 film festivals, including the 57th Ann Arbor Film Festival, the 68th Melbourne Film Festival, the 45th Hongkong International Film Festival, the 16th Vienna Shorts and 23rd PÖFF Shorts. Underground Serenade (2025) follows DJs through their daily life of searching for the perfect track while facing a challenging reality. The film showcases the director’s admiration for the infinity of music as an art form and the dedication of his protagonists to keep on going.

Director's note

Despite the many obstacles caused by the pandemic, an independent group of DJs from Lisbon overcomes the struggle with creative resistance. The four friends Bruno, Renas, Jonny and Hugo have not stopped producing sets of electronic music, funk and world music. After being closed for many weeks, the nights at the Crew Hassan bar slowly return to normality.
